Description

A desirable community on the shores of Lake Michigan in southwest Lower Michigan, South Haven (population 3,964) is seeking a Police Chief who is looking for a long-term relationship with South Haven and is a leader who wishes to immerse themselves in the attributes that make South Haven a wonderful place for families, businesses, and industry. Residents value the small-town atmosphere with safe and walkable neighborhoods and excellent parks and schools.

The next Police Chief will be encouraged to treat the South Haven community as their home and be visible at the many local events, including parades, Light Up the Lake Fireworks (held on the 3rd of July), festivals (Blueberry Festival, Harborfest, Ice Breaker, etc.) and more.

You will find that the South Haven City Council is supportive of the police department and that the city organization has excellent departmental leadership and a supportive and hardworking staff. This position is rooted in strong collaboration and communication internally and externally. In addition, civility should be a core characteristic of the next Police Chief. The city also has strong financials, high-quality parks, and great relationships within the area, including neighboring townships, the Chamber, Public Schools, and county. The city desires a Chief who appreciates teamwork and has excellent communication skills with not only the staff and City Manager but also the Council and citizens.

The City Manager has identified that they prefer a collaborative leader who has a vision for the department and is open to working with citizens and organizations in the entire region. It is also emphasized that this position is a working chief position where the Chief will sometimes work alongside their staff in many different areas. Candidates should possess a four-year degree in a leadership-related field, such as criminal justice, public administration, business administration, or a related field, and should have demonstrated management experience. Any applicant must be MCOLES certified. The salary range for the Police Chief position is $100,000 - $110,000. The starting salary will be based on qualifications and experience.
