Law Enforecement Deputy Chief
Leads and manages all operations and programs of the entire Division to include law enforcement, security and dispatch. This position is responsible for emergency preparedness and planning the critical incident response for the College. In addition to general law enforcement duties, this position is responsible for accomplishing the department objectives through subordinate supervisors with diverse areas of responsibility to include uniformed patrol, criminal investigation, communication center, record clerk, and technical operations. Serves as an advisors to the Chief of Police/Director of Public Safety. In the absence of the Chief of Police assume the role as the Director of Public Safety.
A Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in a law enforcement or public safety agency, which must include 4 years of supervisory experience and 5 years of command level experience. Certification by the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy in accordance with § 23-23-40 of the Code of Laws of South Carolina required. Must have the ability to qualify with and carry a weapon. Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and/or Master’s degree in Public Administration, Criminal Justice, Management or other related field is preferred. Advanced training in Senior Management Institute for Police is desirable. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply.
Must have excellent communication skills and public speaking ability. Must have demonstrated leadership, organizational, interpersonal, and public relations management skills, preferably in campus law enforcement. Must have a thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of modern police administration and management. Considerable knowledge of budgets, acquisition, purchasing and personnel management is necessary. Ability to direct activities of a large police force (approx. 68 employees). Considerable knowledge of the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act and Title IX. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within the College community. Ability to work in a diverse environment with people of various ages and backgrounds. Ability and skill to build consensus and credibility across the campus is required. Must be able to maintain effective working relationships with the city, county and state law enforcement agencies and local community associations. Must use discretion in handling confidential situations, documents and materials.
Some travel is required. Must be able to work extended hours. Required to be on campus during emergency situations. Must have the ability to safely operate a police vehicle under normal/emergency conditions.
