CALEA Accreditation programs continuously undergo comprehensive reviews to remain contemporary and serve as the most recognized resource for best practices in the public safety industry. Specific content reviews often follow major changes in technology, legal rulings, lessons learned from critical events, and fluctuations in societal norms or perspectives. 

The CALEA Standards for Campus Security were first issued in October 2011. Since then, they have been regularly updated as necessary. 

In 2018 a working group was formed to exam the CALEA Standards for Campus Security to ensure they comported with the current trends, practices and contemporary thinking in the campus security environment. 

At a meeting on November 26, 2018, the Commission voted to adopt the updated version of Campus Security Standards, to include a tiered option. Since that time, a final review process has been taking place to ensure all changes and updates are recorded appropriately in the Power DMS platform. 

The Commission recognizes transitioning to a manual that contains numerous and at times, substantive changes, takes time and a protracted implementation period is the most responsible method to achieve the desired outcome of full compliance. Therefore, the Commission has endorsed a Transition Policy intended to take effect upon the issuance of the Campus Security revised standards. 

For the purposes of this transition policy, the effective date of the 2nd edition standards manual is May 1, 2019. 

Actively enrolled agencies currently in self-assessment may remain in the CALEA Standards for Campus Security 1st Edition until awarded. However, no initial accreditation awards under the 1st Edition will be awarded after July 2020. 

Effective May 1, 2019, actively enrolled agencies in reaccreditation cycles may remain in the CALEA standards for Campus Security 1st Edition until the close of their current cycle. However, no accreditation awards under the 1st Edition will be awarded after August 1, 2021. 

Any agency enrolling in the CALEA Campus Security Accreditation programming after May 1, 2019 must do so under CALEA Standards for Campus Security 2nd Edition to include any future versions containing updates.
