Orlando, Fla. (Aug. 25, 2020) - The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement (CALEA®) and PowerDMS, a leader in cloud-based crucial information and policy management technology, today announced the launch of online testing for CALEA Accreditation Assessors. Using PowerDMS, CALEA now provides qualified professionals with the ability to complete assessor testing online, without having to attend a CALEA Conference or event.
CALEA assessors serve as site-based evaluators within the accreditation process, reporting on candidate agencies’ ability to comply with the requisite number of applicable standards. In the past, assessor applicants have been required to complete the CALEA Process and Programs Knowledge Examination and Writing Assessment in person, at a CALEA Conference. Using the PowerDMS cloud-based software platform, candidates with the requisite subject matter expertise, as well as existing assessors requiring reevaluation, can now securely perform this exam remotely.
In addition to providing easy access to the exam, the PowerDMS cloud-based software platform now enables CALEA to holistically manage the assessment program, including tracking and managing assessors’ training cycles. As standards evolve and reevaluation is required, PowerDMS sends automated knowledge confirmation reminders and tracks progress within the system.
“CALEA has the responsibility of maintaining the most professional and competent assessors to provide services to public safety agencies. By bringing our assessment testing online, we are now able to extend our commitment with the support of our longstanding partner, PowerDMS,” said W. Craig Hartley, Jr., Executive Director of CALEA. “We successfully piloted online assessor testing at our CALEA Virtual Conference this summer and the feedback has been extremely positive. We are proud to serve our clients in this progressive manner.”
“We are excited to expand our partnership with CALEA so they can continue the critical process of hiring and maintaining the most qualified team of assessors effectively and efficiently during this time,” said David DiGiacomo, CEO of PowerDMS. “From the outset, our partnership has focused on how to use our technology to promote efficiencies in policy management and standards compliance, and we are excited to further our relationship with this newest capability.”
PowerDMS and CALEA’s longstanding partnership has allowed for the very best in public safety accreditation services. Earlier this month, PowerDMS and CALEA announced a free standards and policy platform for law enforcement and public safety agencies that will launch in September. It will provide agencies the opportunity to more rapidly develop crucial policies by benchmarking them to accredited agencies’ policies using the international gold standard in public safety accreditation.

About CALEA
The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc., (CALEA®) was created in 1979 as a credentialing authority through the joint efforts of law enforcement's major executive associations: International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP); National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE); National Sheriffs' Association (NSA); and the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF). The purpose of CALEA’s Accreditation Programs is to improve the delivery of public safety services, primarily by: maintaining a body of standards, developed by public safety practitioners, covering a wide range of up-to-date public safety initiatives; establishing and administering an accreditation process; and recognizing professional excellence. Specifically, CALEA’s goals are to Strengthen crime prevention and control capabilities; Formalize essential management procedures; Establish fair and nondiscriminatory personnel practices; Improve service delivery; Solidify interagency cooperation and coordination, and Increase community and staff confidence in the agency. The CALEA Accreditation Process is a proven modern management model; once implemented, it presents the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), on a continuing basis, with a blueprint that promotes the efficient use of resources and improves service delivery— regardless of the size, geographic location, or functional responsibilities of the agency. This accreditation program provides public safety agencies an opportunity to voluntarily demonstrate that they meet an established set of professional standards based on industry best practices and approved by an all-volunteer board of commissioners.
